MY REFUGE AND MY HELP

It was midnight when I returned from work, but during the driving period a beloved family member, who was in a critical health condition, came back to mind. In that very instant, I evoked that ineptitude that we humans experience when confronted with adversity.

While driving, I continued revolving in my thoughts about this inability and I recalled the moment when the Lord Jesus asked of his disciples if they wanted to go away. I remembered that Peter answered with two statements, which in my opinion, are fundamental in the life of any person. The first one was a question, - “Lord, to whom shall we go? – and the second one was an assertion, “you have the words of eternal life.”

On that occasion the apostle was not experiencing an adverse circumstance, however, his words resounded in my mind with such a relevance, that they provoked that very reaction we have when in need of help. Precisely when we do not know neither what to do, nor what to say.

Consequently, the question made by Peter and his assertion were integrated into my request and I prayed: - Lord, if you being our hope do not intervene in our fragile lives, to whom shall we go? If thy words, which are of eternal life, do not give strength to the weary, what shall we do?

There is no doubt that we are constantly surrounded by calamities, but I understand that God is faithful to his word and his word remains forever. So, considering the poor health condition of our family member, and being aware of my inability to do something, I found that I did not have other than the Lord from whom I might obtain a favorable answer. Why? Because it was and it is impossible for me to do what only God can do. Then, I meditated on his promises and said to myself, truly no other has said such words as my Lord. His words “whoever believes in me, though he dies, yet shall he live” calmed down my spirit and I gave thanks to God.

In some circumstances we seek help from other people (trusting they are loyal) because God has given us abilities to confront diverse situations. But when we face the insuperable and tragedy strikes our lives, there is no better place than getting close to the Lord for whom nothing is impossible. He is Lord above all things. Only in him we have true hope that never fades away.

And because his promises in him are yes, and in him amen, when in adversity I shall seek the Lord and his words shall sustain me up.

I know that my redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand on the earth.   And after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God (Job 19:25-26).
